Some of you may have noticed the hubbub and construction around the Garden Shed. Ocean Heir is thrilled to be taking over part of the old Deer Run space.  And despite a little noise and a little chaos we have been, and will be open throughout the remodeling process.  (Fans of Deer Run, have no fear, Leslie has taken her gifts and her talent and joined Left Field Gallery in SLO).

We plan  to expand our selection of cards and books, install a lounge area (you can think of it as the Husband Comfort Station), and just generally give us all a little more elbow room. We think you are going to love it, we're not done yet and we already do! 

These guys did a great job on the new floor!

First, there was the construction shoring up and weather-proofing the space. That went on for several weeks, and parts of  were pretty ugly, dirty and noisy (thanks to the Garden Shed for the property improvements and our neighbors for their patience).  Walls went up, walls came down, concrete was poured (several times), new roof, and, in true Garden Shed tradition, we have a beautiful new mosaic floor transition between the old and new spaces.   

Cully:  Handyman, Magician, Fashion Consultant

Then, our good friend and unparalleled handyman extraordinaire, Cully, handled all the Ocean Heir improvements as deftly as a magician.  He's framed walls, run electrical, installed windows, hung doors, and built new fixtures, everything that needed doing he did.  If that wasn't enough he's been a design consultant, lighting technician, Heiress tamer (sometimes we get a little nervous), and fixed our computer. He knows the difference between a boat neck and a scoop, and he's kept us ahead of schedule.  Cully, if we haven't said it yet, THANK YOU!

The Heiresses have been cleaning, merchandising, and re-fluffing all corners of the store, and of course, the Heiress-in-Chief is personally overseeing every detail.  There are just a few more construction details to button up, but we are very, very close, and should be completely done before the end of April.   Things may have moved around a bit, but it is all still here and an Heiress is always available to help find your favorites.  So come on by and be among the first to check out the new and improved Ocean Heir!

Record Store Day

Record store day is April 18, 2015, participating artists will release new music exclusively to Independent record stores .  The annual event was founded in 2007 as a celebration of the culture of the independent record store.  To find out more visit http://www.recordstoreday.com/.

Turquoise Trending

This time of year people are drawn to our door by this spectacular tree.  We Heiresses are bombarded daily by questions about it.  Not that we mind, but none of us claim to be horticulturists.   Find out more about this drought tolerant California native at‬

The Benches

The Bench at Ocean Heir

The eye-catching bench was originally commissioned in 2000 by Heiress-in-Chief Diane Matzner, then owner of the Palm Springs stores Mosaic, La Mariposa, and Aristokatz. Artist Harvey Silverman spent nearly a month piecing together the tile, ceramic, and other materials over a solid concrete form. The completed bench weighs nearly one ton, and truly is very comfortable.

An enthusiastic supporter of art in public places, Diane installed the bench in front of the two Plaza Mercado Center stores (Mosaic and La Mariposa), where it immediately drew tons of attention. It has been featured in several newspaper articles, widely photographed, and is rumored to have been the site of at least one marriage proposal.

The bench traveled with Diane across country for several years. When she opened Ocean Heir in Cambria, in October 2012, the bench found a new home in the courtyard of the Shops at the Garden Shed where all us Heiresses enjoy watching the delight it brings our visitors every day.

All us Heiresses share a common love of animals and a passion for animal rescue. The marquee fundraiser for our local animal shelter HART, "Wines, Pines, and Felines," is scheduled for April 12 this year at Camp Ocean Pines. Ocean Heir, among many local businesses, has made a donation towards the raffle. Tickets are available now. Ocean Heir's support of HART is much deeper than a simple raffle donation.  Another of Diane's public art creations, a painted metal sculpture bench, originally commissioned for her Aristokatz store has been donated to Hart, where it sits proudly on the grounds of the facility at 2638 Main street in Cambria.

On September 4, 2014 the bench (lovingly repainted by local artist Judy Lyon) was unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony marking  the opening of the newly revamped  HART gift shop (vamping  provided by our Heiress-in-Chief). The shop is chock      full interesting and useful stuff, to help you care for, pamper,   and proclaim your love  for your special pet http://www.slohart.org/store.htm         

Really, HART is a very special organization and a terrific asset to our community. The Main street shelter is an impressive accomplishment, and is worth a visit whether you are looking to adopt, shop, or just take a tour. Join all the Heiress in our support of HART, every little bit  helps!

Something Old, Something New...

        This week at Ocean Heir we are welcoming our new social media heiress, Katherine Williams, to the crew! Katherine comes to us all the way from a small privately owned marketing firm in Boise Idaho! She has spent the last couple of years working remotely from the High

 Sierras. She is an experienced outdoorswoman, enjoys rock climbing and backpacking in her free time, and is currently learning to surf. Katherine is new to Cambria as well, so if you see her catching waves, working in the shop
, or even just walking by, please stop and say hello! Katherine has a sweet disposition, a great fashion sense and an established eye for detail that we look forward t

s beautifully unique block print designs and handcrafted cards (…carried in the shop of course!)! If you were lucky enough to have seen her work earlier this year at the SLO Museum of Art, then you know it’s gorgeous, modern, and very reasonably priced!
